As you would expect, permanent teeth are intended to last a lifetime. However, sometimes a dentist may want to pull a tooth if it is crowded, impacted, or damaged beyond repair. After a dentist has considered all options and tried everything, tooth extraction may be the last viable option.

Here are some reasons why your dentist may recommend a tooth extraction.

  • Impaction

When the growth of one tooth pushes directly against another, this is known as tooth impaction. Impacted teeth are very much susceptible to infection. This can lead to bleeding or inflamed gums as well as jaw discomfort.

  • Overcrowding

Overcrowding can cause severe discomfort and infections. This can then be the cause of crookedness in an otherwise well-aligned smile. When dentists are able to remove problematic teeth, this can create more room for the other teeth.

  • Dental Emergencies

Dental emergencies can count as a total knock-out or even just chipped teeth. Dentists will base the treatment on the severity of the emergency. Sometimes a tooth may become too damaged, and it will need to be removed.

  • Advanced Gum Disease

Periodontal disease is caused by the buildup of bacteria on the teeth and gums and is irreversible. This disease is extremely sneaky and burdens around half of American adults who are aged over 30. Without the correct care, periodontal disease can ruin the gums and supporting bones.

  • Tooth Decay

Bacterial buildup on the teeth can often lead to tooth decay. Only a dental hygienist is able to remove it through a tooth extraction. If a dental hygienist is unable to help and the infection becomes bad, the tooth will need to be pulled.

Tooth extractions are never a first option. However, they should never be completely ruled out. Your dentist will be able to tell you what the best option is for you.
